Today we present a farm with an old tradition of breeding. Enjoy the interview with:

Syðra-Skörðugil is located in the heart of Skagafjörður,  on road 75,  between Varmahlíð and Sauðárkrókur.  Here the family has been farming since 1940.  In 1940 Sigurjón Jónasson, better known as Dúddi á Skörðugili, bought the farm and started the breeding of horses.  He was very successful in his breeding. In 1973 his daughter Ásdís Sigurjónsdóttir and her husband Einar Gíslason moved to Syðra-Skörðugil to cooperate with her parents.

"Before Einar and Ásdis moved to Syðra-Skörðugil they had been breeding horses for a long time at the place Hestur in Borgafjörður. His most famous horse Nökkvi frá Hólmi has placed a huge mark in the breeding of the Icelandic horse. And now they have a new star named Nökkvi, Nökkvifrá Syðra-Skörðugili,  who just won B-Flokkur at Landsmót in Hólar 2016 with his rider Jakob Sigurðsson!

In 1997 Elvar Einarsson and his family took over the farming and the breeding at Syðra-Skörðugil. At that time there was about 25 foals born every year. Training and selling them all at the age of 4-5 year old was the normal procedure. Now there are about 4-5 foals born every year and training and selling them takes longer time. Today the training of the horse is much more professional than 15 years ago. We train the horses much more on their terms and we give them time to grow and learn until they are ready for their new owner.

The breeding at Syðra-Skörðugil  is mostly for fun now. We have a few mares and try to pick the best stallion for each one of them.  What we are looking for when picking a stallion is good temper, good tölt and clear gaits.

We are very much looking forward to welcome our Horse Expo guests. We will introduce them to the whole family and show them our stable, the sheep house, and our guest house. We are not only a horse breeding farm. We have about 650 sheep as well.

Syðra-Skörðugil is also a travel agency. We offer accommodation in our fine guesthouse for up to 14 persons. We also offer both long and short riding tours. We have a range of great horses both for beginners and advanced riders. This is also a part of the farming that we are very excited to introduce to our Horse Expo friends! See you soon!"
